GM CEO Wants Higher Gas Taxes

The 2008 taxpayer bailout of General Motors saved them from extinction by pumping $80 Billion into the company to achieve the rough equivalent of a “forced bankruptcy,” . . . using taxpayer guarantees rather than traditional bankruptcy, which would weaken the union stranglehold on company finances and put private dealerships out of business. Now GM’s CEO thinks that the best way to pay back the public is to raise the gas tax, for their own good of course.

According to an interview in the
Detroit News, GM CEO Dan Akerson wants the federal gas tax increased as much as $1 a gallon to nudge consumers toward more fuel-efficient cars. He said that this would do more good for the environment than forcing automakers to comply with higher gas-mileage standards.

As the article says: “This must be the kind arrogance that comes with being the CEO of a company that had to rely on the private property of taxpayers to stay in business.”

Apparently Akerson doesn’t care about the rest of the economy that relies on low gas prices to keep it from grinding to a worse halt that we are experiencing now.
